When municipalities begin salting the roads, attempt to recover as much of the salt as possible, as it can be used for cooking. If the road salt is being mixed with sand, look for recipes that include sand. Salt is like $0.17 per ounce, so it's definitely worth your time.

Pro tip, melt the sandy salt in warm water and the sand will settle out.

Also you can use the recovered salt/sand to cover your car before a big storm to prevent snow and ice buildup.

It works wonders on steel bodies, eventually it allows the snow/ice to pass through the body panels and thus prevent buildup.
